Lawrence
(Lorenzo) Ruiz, the first Filipino to be canonized, and 15 companions,
Dominican and lay missionaries from Spain, France, the Philippines
and Japan, were martyred between 1633 and 1637 at Nagasaki by decree
of the emperor Tokugawa Yemitsu, as part of his policy to purify
Japan from the influence of Christianity.
