Ignatius
(died 1556) was a soldier who founded the Society of Jesus (The
Jesuits). He authored the Spiritual Exercises and founded
the Roman College. At his death, the order had grown to number 1,000
members in 76 houses in places as diverse as Brazil, Japan and India.
Jesuit missionaries were the first to catechize entire nations and
peoples throughout the world, including the Untied States, where
Jesuits brought the Gospel to Canada, New York, Arizona, New Mexico
and other areas.
