St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata

October 4

Francis died on October 3, 1226. He was noted for his charismatic personality, deep compassion for all and love for God's creation. He renounced his family wealth to follow "lady poverty." Ordained a deacon, he founded the Firars Minor (Franciscans), the Poor Clares and the Third Order, wrote Canticle of the Sun. He received the stigmata on Sept. 14, 1224 and was canonized only two years after his death.
